About TAMAY ...

Tamay is 36, her name in Dzao is really Ly Ta May. She has four children, one daughter Phan La May is 15, and three sons Phan Lao Ta, 13, Phan Lao La, 10 and Phan Lao Si (Ni nga: gorgeous) is only 3 months. Tamay lives with her husband, Vang, independent from her parents in-law, something which is a big achievement financially for a Red Dzao woman. For the last 12 years Tamay has been going to Sapa market to buy and sell old textiles. Over this time she taught herself english from the tourists and it is now at such a good level that she has helped many women in the village to speak a little english, enabling them to sell textiles to tourists and earn an income. It is really important to Tamay to do what she can to improve the standard of living for everyone in the village.
