The ethics...
The textiles are all sourced from local women around Sapa market town, primarily supporting Tamay, her extended family and other families who live in the village of Taphin. Tamay will spend a lot of time visiting families who do not have access to sell their old textiles either because they don't have have money or time to get to the market or because they can't speak any english.
Almost everything is second hand and no longer has any value for the Red Dzao people. Women are considered lazy if they do not make new clothes for themselves and their families each year. The clothing that you can buy here would perhaps have been used as dish rags if it was not being sold.
Some items have been remade to use embroidery that is no longer wearable, for example the bags. The women either work from home or in the market when they have some spare time.
No items sold on through TAMAY AND ME are mass-produced for tourist consumption.
The textiles are all hand-made. Cotton cloth dyed with complex fixed indigo dyes made from village plants are entirely natural and sustainable. The silk is very high grade sourced from Southern Vietnam.
Most importantly ... all the embroidery is hand stiched counted thread work, it is almost too amazing to believe but this is entirely handmade and the women really would love you to buy it!
